Another Post About Blog "Rules" . . .

...Or should I say, where there shouldn't really be any.

Well I guess - first things first - Happy Valentine's Day!  My husband isn't a big fan so we won't be doing anything.  And that's OK with me.
Anyways...

I have seen a lot of these posts about "Blog Rules" and how people think you should maintain/run your blog.  Well I guess I just wanted to say what I thought of these "rules".

So, there are of course, going to be other bloggers that do things that annoy you.  But you know what...the whole point of having a blog is to do anything - whatever you want.  You really can have crazy fonts, bright colors, and posts that make no sense.  Of course you probably won't have a million readers, because they probably can't read what your saying.  But you know what - whatever makes you happy.

Also, unless you are trying to earn money or really trying to get a lot of followers,  you don't need rules.  As long as you are (maybe) funny, interesting, genuine, and have the same interests as some of the millions of people on the Internet, you'll be fine.

Here are some things that I have seen people make "rules" about, that I just don't agree with.
- Long posts:  If you want to post 3 pages worth of writing...you go ahead, because apparently you have a lot to say.
- Bad spelling/grammar:  OK, you know you can always use spellcheck and I do appreciate people using their/there/they're correctly.  But I am no grammar person. (as you can tell by that previous sentence) I don't capitalize my "I's", and I have no clue the correct way to use commas and these things ";" ":" "-"-".  Plus, run on sentences likes to think I'm his BFF.  (however I try not to return his calls)

Those are just 2 of the many things i have seen on multiple "Blog Rules" posts.  I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and like things a certain way but this is the world after all.  Where everyone has their own thoughts and preferences.

However Comments/Commenting should have a few guidelines (just to be helpful for the bloggers whose post you are commenting on) -
It would be great if you didn't comment on my post just to pimp out your giveaway, or the "I am your new follower so follow me back"...especially because more than once I have gotten that and the person actually doesn't follow me.  The reason it bothers and offends me is because you aren't here to read what I have to say...you are here to gain followers or get people to enter your giveaway.

Lastly: the non-reply-bloggers (you can read about how to fix that here).

So truthfully,  I believe you can do what you want.  I feel like the majority of bloggers blog because they like it.  They get to vent and write about whatever they want...but don't get me wrong, the comments are nice.  And it's nice knowing that someone is reading what you are writing...but isn't it nice knowing that they are reading the things you enjoy writing?  With no rules?

*I realize this post may be all over the place and doesn't have a lot of structure - sorry*

I agree 100%. People just need to do what they want to do and share what they want to share. Rules are for school and work...other than that, do what you feel! I am horrible at grammar too, people probably roll their eyes at my posts every day! Hey, I try! Happy Heart Day!

I agree! Its hard to have rules for something that should be different from person to person

I agree! If you say you're my newest follower, you better be my newest follower! lol. Nobody likes fake friends!

I get so upset about the no-reply comments b/c I can't respond to them : (

AND those stupid verification boxes annoy me!

I'm still learning stuff about blogs, so I haven't really seen the blog rules, but I totally agree with you. It's your blog you should do whatever you want, it seems stupid that people even take the time to make up rules about it.

I'm also a fairly new blogger (6 months going strong) and I haven't come across the blog rules as of yet, but I agree that I don't think there should be any rules!

I was going to do a blog post about this because I've been dying to know how to respond to people and I just can't seem to figure it out. Since you seem to understand how all of this stuff works, and taught me how to make sure my email is being shown, I figured I would ask you for some help - if you don't mind :)

OK here it goes: I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to email a response to a blogger who left a comment on my page. I always feel like a terrible person for not being able to respond and when I go to respond on their blog, I feel like they need a reference to what I am referring to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

I am on the same page as you. I don't like feeling guilted into following someones blog just because they follow mine. And if you don't want to read someone's long post, then don't. There's no rules that I really think are necessary for any blog, aside from not purposely offending someone else.

I love that you put this out there! I appreciate some of the blog rules posts because it is nice to know what people enjoy, but really... if you don't like it then don't read it! I hate that so many people are making this into a contest, when really it's just a fun way to express yourself and get to know some new people with similar interests.

LOL I have't seen any rules yet, that's funny! I feel the same as you - a person's blog is theirs. If someone doesn't like it, they don't have to visit.

But I totally agree with the ridic comments. If you're not going to read my post, just don't comment haha :)

Happy VDay!
